Love Your Neighbor as Yourself: A Message for the World

A commandment is a direct instruction from God that tells us how to live and how to treat others. The Bible gives many commands for how to live, but they all point toward a greater truth: we are called to love. The Ten Commandments show what love looks like in daily life, but the command to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31) is not one of the Ten. It is the foundation beneath them. Jesus said the entire Law rests on two commandments: loving God with your whole heart and loving your neighbor as yourself. When we understand this, the Ten Commandments become more than rules; they become a picture of what love looks like in action.

And loving each other is not hard. You only need to think about how you want to be loved and offer that same kindness to someone else. When we live this way, love becomes the one thing that can soften hearts, heal wounds, and change the world around us.

As we look at the Ten Commandments, we can see how each one teaches us something about love. God calls us to put Him first, to avoid idols, and to honor His name. He teaches us to rest, to honor our parents, and to value life. He tells us to be faithful in marriage, to respect what belongs to others, to speak truthfully, and to guard our hearts from envy. Each one of these instructions shows us how to love God and how to love people.

This connects directly to Jesus’ words in Matthew 22:37–39, where He says that loving God and loving your neighbor are the foundation of faithful living. The command to “love your neighbor as yourself” is also found in Leviticus 19:18, Mark 12:31, and Luke 10:27.

Following the Commandments

When you follow the commandment of love, the other commandments naturally fall into place. And when you add love for God, they are strengthened even more. Love speaks to every problem we face. Where love is present, life is valued. Love does not murder, and it does not turn against itself, because it recognizes the worth of every life. When you truly love, you will not lie, steal, or cheat. When love is practiced in marriage, it produces faithfulness. A heart filled with love has no room for envy.

The Importance of Teaching the Young

I taught my children to love by helping them understand how one choice leads to another. I showed them that lying, cheating, stealing, and killing are connected in a chain. One wrong choice can open the door to the next if it isn’t corrected. If you allow yourself to cheat, it becomes easier to steal. If you allow yourself to steal, your heart can grow harder toward what is right. That is why it is so important to choose truth, love, and integrity from the beginning. And it is even more important to teach these things while our children are young.

Love Can Change the World

Living out the Ten Commandments in our daily lives leads to better lives because they teach us how to love. When we love God fully and love people genuinely, the other commandments take care of themselves. And loving each other is not hard. You only need to think about how you want to be loved and offer that same kindness to someone else. When we live this way, love becomes something real and visible. It softens anger, heals wounds, and brings peace into places that have been hurting for a long time. This is how love changes the world, one choice, one moment, one person at a time.
