A Little Bit of Everybody – A Child’s Story

Grandma always tells me I’m a little bit of everybody. She says my genes have special markers that show all the people who are part of me. When she says that, I squeeze my doll tight and feel proud, like I’m carrying all their stories inside.

Native American Roots

Grandma says our family started as native people of the Americas, living first in South America before making their way north. Our ancestors walked and explored, meeting the people already living in North America. They became friends, lived together, and sometimes married. Grandma’s great‑grandfather farmed the earth and planted it by the sun and the moon.

African Heritage

Grandma tells me that long ago, people came from Africa to America, too. Our ancestors met them, learned from them, and sometimes made families together. They shared stories, foods, and songs. Grandma cooks spicy African dishes, and I always giggle when she dances in the kitchen.

European and Irish Lineage

Hundreds of years ago, European explorers sailed across the ocean in big ships. They came to America and met the Native and African people already here. They built homes, made families, and brought their own stories and traditions.

Grandma says when she looks at me, she sees all that I am. She sees Native American from the North and the South, African, European, and Irish roots. I hug my doll close and smile. I feel proud knowing my family comes from so many places, and together they make me who I am.

I’m a little bit of everybody, and everybody is a little bit of me.
