Representatives from various nations gather for a high-level diplomatic conference under the NATO emblem.

NATO Only Fights When a Member Is Attacked
NATO is a defensive alliance, not an offensive one.
Its core rule — Article 5 — says that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. It is only triggered when a member nation is attacked, and even then, each country chooses how to assist.
How often has Article 5 been used?
Only once in NATO’s entire history.
And that was after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States in 2001.
What did NATO do after 9/11?

  • Sent AWACS aircraft to help patrol U.S. airspace
  • Launched Operation Active Endeavour to secure the Mediterranean
  • Provided support and solidarity to the U.S. as an ally
    That’s it.
    No invasions.
    No forced wars.
    No automatic military action.
Just collective defense, used only once, in response to the deadliest attack on American soil.
